Students in grades 5 and 7 will participate in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) that consists of five performance components: aerobic capacity, abdominal strength, trunk strength, upper body strength, and flexibility. The physical fitness test used in California schools is the FITNESSGRAM, a comprehensive health-related physical fitness assessment. The purpose of the PFT is to assist students in establishing lifetime habits of regular physical activity. Carolyn Clark 5th grade students will take this assessment during the March 13 - May 19, 2023 testing window.

Math Placement Test for 7th Grade
The testing window when 6th graders will take the MDTP (Math Diagnostic Testing Project) math placement test will be between May 22-31, 2023. The specific testing date for Carolyn Clark 6th grade students will be available soon.
For incoming 7th graders, all ESD middle schools offer Common Core Math 7 and Accelerated Math 7/8. Students' scoring at a mastery level qualify for advanced math class for 7th grade. Additional questions about the MDTP math assessment, or the district's set criteria for establishing math placement, can be directed to the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. You will be notified of your child's placement in August when student schedules are are posted in PowerSchool, which is typically the day before school begins.
Completing programs such as Jose Valdéz Math, Math Enrichment, or other programs over the summer does not qualify students to skip classes or be placed in advanced classes for the coming school year.
While we understand the desire to challenge and accelerate your child's learning, math placement is determined by the MDTP assessment of your child's academic performance, readiness, and potential. This assessment takes into account a variety of factors, including but not limited to, grades, standardized test scores, and teacher evaluations.
We encourage all of our students to engage in academic enrichment opportunities over the summer, as these can greatly benefit their overall academic growth and development. However, we want to emphasize that such programs are not considered for advanced placement.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support of your child's education.
